So I watched the first episode of One Piece and I already love Monkey D. Luffy! He is oblivious to pretty much everything except his mission to become King of the Pirates, eating whatever he can and giving brutally honest opinions. Also, Luffy knows how to throw hands! Because he ate a Gum-Gum Fruit, which is one of the so-called Devil Fruits, the fruit basically turned him into Stretch Armstrong (a throwback for you old heads). I watched Luffy knock the daylights out of some pirates like it was nothing. But before all of that, he dropped a gem that really stuck with me.
Luffy made it very clear that he was going to be the King of the Pirates and would find the “One Piece,” a treasure of immeasurable value that once belonged to a pirate named Gol D. Roger. Luffy made this declaration to a cute little coward named Koby, who basically asked him if he thought he would find the treasure, since it seemed like such an impossible task. Then Luffy said the most gangster shit ever:
It's not about whether I can or not. I'm gonna do it because I want to.
When I tell you that I can relate to that quote, I really mean it. Because anytime I’ve ever set a goal, I’ve set it because I wanted to and because I knew I would accomplish that goal. I never let anyone stop me, not even myself. I’ve always believed that I could accomplish whatever I set my mind to, and Luffy is no different. He wants to be King of the Pirates and he won’t let anyone stop him. He isn’t arrogant or boastful. Luffy just wants what he wants, plain and simple. I, for one, can’t wait to see if he finds the One Piece.
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post about Episode 2.
